Le film, sorti par Warner Bros.point 98 | et diffusé en streaming sur HBO Max, est basé sur un roman de 1983 de l’écrivain britannique Roald Dahl.point 193 | Les méchantes sorcières sont au cœur de l’intrigue, et elles sont montrées comme ayant des mains et des pieds en forme de griffes sans orteils (la Grande sorcière, représentée par Anne Hathaway, a un seul orteil qui dépasse de chaque pied).point 407 | 1

Le film a été accusé de discrimination envers les personnes souffrant d’ectrodactylie, une maladie génétique rare qui se signale par une absence d’un ou plusieurs orteils ou de doigts.

« Je suis tout à fait consciente que c’est un film, et que ce sont des sorcières, mais les sorcières sont essentiellement des monstres. Ma crainte, c’est que les enfants regardent ce film sans savoir qu’il exagère énormément les représentations faites dans l’oeuvre originale de Roald Dahl et que les différences concernant les membres commencent à leur faire peur », indique Amy Marren, championne paralympique.

« Ton bras fait trop peur, Ton bras me dégoûte. Ce ne sont que quelques-uns des commentaires que j’ai reçus en grandissant. Nous voulons que les handicaps soient normalisés et représentés de manière positive, au lieu d’être associés à une sorcière terrifiante et malfaisante », a déclaré Claire Cashmore, une autre championne paralympique.
